The Wokkeen Interview
Last October, Pittsburgh native Wokkeen unveiled a five-track EP titled YB4P: YrzB4Purp. From an outsider’s perspective, the EP showcased his rapid progression as a lyricist and, with zero features, solidified the 23-year-old’s ability to stand firmly on his own. Internally, however, YB4P marked the starting point of a strategic rollout leading to Wokkeen’s highly anticipated debut full-length project. Fast forward to today—after over three months of consistent pre-release marketing efforts, including singles featuring multiple genre staples—Purp$kiii is set to drop on Wokkeen’s birthday: this Friday, January 24.
Featuring previously released, commercially successful singles such as “#wokk4prez” and “Coraline,” Purp$kiii bursts with Wokkeen’s signature blend of EDM, hip-hop, and pop. To craft this distinctive glitch-pop soundscape, he enlisted the help of genre standouts like Daddex, Bernard Jabs, whiterosemoxie, CThruRio, and Pick Patek. The result is an immersive project that invites listeners to find their own connection—whether through introspective records, bass-heavy anthems, or upbeat head-bangers. Purp$kiii feels like a late-night drive through a neon-lit city: subdued yet teeming with colorful emotion.
The extensive rollout for Purp$kiii has not only expanded Wokkeen’s audience but also highlighted his relentless work ethic as an independent musician. Each track offers a glimpse into his sonic evolution, weaving together personal themes that resonate deeply with listeners who share a similar mindset. Looking ahead, Wokkeen plans to support the release of Purp$kiii with diverse supplemental content, media coverage, and continued efforts to cement his place as one of the most innovative and creativeup-and-coming musicians.
Purp$kiii arrives Friday, January 24, 2025, on all major streaming platforms.
ABOUT WOKKEEN:
Wokkeen is a 23-year-old artist pioneering a unique blend of EDM, pop, and hip-hop into a genre he’s anointed “glitch pop.” The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native draws from a wide range of musical styles for his signature sound, like those of Charli XCX, Trippie Redd, Lil Peep, and more up-and-coming artists in whiterosemoxie and BigBabyGucci. Wokkeen’s music not only merges genres and delivery styles but blends personal themes that resonate with listeners facing similar struggles. In Wokkeen’s own words:
“I know how it feels to have your favorite artists be your only friends or source of advice, and I hope to make anyone who feels out of place in today’s society welcome and appreciated with my music.”
From the outset, Wokkeen’s interest in music had a sturdy foundation. As a kid, his parents often played late 90s and early 2000s records around the house, from artists like Jay Z and Kanye West to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Linkin Park. He sang and played instruments in his elementary school chorus, wrote verses in middle school, and eventually recorded his first song with friends as a freshman in high school. Nowadays, Wokkeen’s creative process is fluid and spontaneous. He captures ideas in his notes app wherever inspiration strikes, whether at home or on the go. Drafts of records made at his home studio are transformed into polished, release-ready records by recording engineer Big Jerm at Pittsburgh’s iconic ID Labs.
Thus far, Wokkeen’s music has earned him attention from various media outlets and blogs, mainly for his fan-favorite records “make my heart stop.”, “#wokk4prez”, and personal favorite “3:33am (Freestyle).” These tracks were included on Wokkeen’s most recent offering, a featureless, five-song EP titled “YB4Purp” available to stream now. However, Wokkeen’s focus now is on the early 2025 release of his debut album “Pürp$kīīī” and to continue to maintain an authentic connection with his audience.
